Tips for the first step in designing your space
The focal point of a room is just that—the point that is the first to draw focus. Start by asking yourself what you would like to see first when you enter the room. It should be interesting, incorporating texture, color and visual appeal. The focal point will be the cornerstone around which you arrange the furniture and accessories in the room.
If the room you are decorating does not have a natural focal point, such as a great room fireplace, built-in bookcase or a bay window with a beautiful view, look for a wall where you can display a collection of artwork or one large painting. You also can incorporate one substantial piece of furniture framed with unique and colorful accessories. Or try creating an accent wall by painting one wall of the room a deeper color than the other walls; accessorize it with artwork and special lighting for a dramatic effect.
Tips for creating a focal point:
Use your focal point to suggest the direction, theme, colors and style of your space.
Be careful of putting too many “wow” factors in one room. It is tiring to the eye, and they all can’t be appreciated.
Make sure your focal point is illuminated with well-placed lighting.
Try not to let the TV be the focal point, unless you are designing a media room. If you must focus on the TV area, try to enclose it in a cabinet or surround it with storage and display units.
For an understated focal point, try establishing the tone of the space with an accent rug.
To bring attention to a small item as a focal point, create a grouping by adding sconces or other pictures around it.
