Decorator Screens
Coromandel screens are hand-crafted by Chinese traditional methods dating back to the 17th Century. Wooden panels are prepared by applying layers of soft clay and lacquer to the panels before the craftsmen carve the designs. The designs are then painted with color or gilded with gold- or silver-leaf.
Oil-painted screens honor the Western oil-painting technique except that the design is painted on wood panels instead of canvas. Each screen is comprised of a set of wooden panels. These panels are first treated with a base paint and then distributed to an individual artist to paint the design on the panels. These panels are then antique-treated and hinged together to create an overall picture on a screen.
